Ragtime Records are back with another installment of their official Harlem Hamfats Remix series. This time we welcome the bassline skanking heavyweight Cockney Nutjob with his remix of the classic ‘Root Hog Or Die’ out 24th February 2026.
Originally recorded by Chicago jazz outfit Harlem Hamfats, the 1930s pioneers were renowned for their raw, dancefloor-driven blend of dirty blues, Dixieland and swing. Root Hog Or Die stood out for its emotive trumpet lines and melancholy vocal, capturing the grit and soul of the era.
Cockney Nutjob is known for his uptempo fun party anthems infused with Ska, Swing & Reggae. In this remix he sticks true to form with bouncy UKG beats, and a healthy dose of whompy bass. Pump this one over a big sub woofer if you can to appreciate the full body moving low end. Over the rhythm track, the brass, vocal and piano parts have been chopped and scratched playfully over the top, keeping the track interesting and flowing throughout.
Cockney Nutjob is a UK DJ/Producer known for an unmistakable, trademark sound that fuses skank-heavy riddims with modern bass culture. Drawing from Ska, Swing and Reggae foundations, his music blends seamlessly with Hip Hop, Breakbeat and UK Garage, creating high-energy tracks built for both the dancefloor and the sound system.

Harlem Hamfats. Chicago jazz band formed in 1936. Initially, they mainly provided backup music for jazz and blues singers, such as Johnny Temple, Rosetta Howard, and Frankie Jaxon, for Decca Records.Their first record, “Oh! Red”, became a hit, securing them a Decca contract for fifty titles, and they launched a successful recording career performing their own brand of dirty blues, dixieland and swing.
